Set in a beautiful natural valley with an abundance of thermal water, the site offered a rare development opportunity. Recently completed, the project is both a redevelopment of the historic AC Baths, and an extension of the recent modern Events Centre.
The design follows the theme of that building, and contains two separate wings leading from the existing circulation spine. The north wing skirts the existing outdoor 25m pool, and includes a link containing nine new private mineral pools, that lead to the new 400-seat pool competition hall.
The leisure pool building forms the south wing, and includes a hydro-slide tower with twin slides, a separate learners pool, and change and service spaces. The amount of available thermal water has allowed the opportunity to also heat the outdoor pools. These are connected to the indoor leisure pool via channels through the exterior walls, allowing swimmers the luxury of moving between the indoor and outdoor pools in the dead of winter without leaving the water.
