Odyssey House

Odyssey House is a non-profit organisation offering support for New Zealanders whose lives are affected by drug, alcohol and other addiction challenges.

ASC Architects was commissioned to design a new base for the administration staff of Odyssey House on their Bollard Ave site in New Windsor, Auckland.  The site also houses their existing adult and family support facilities.  The new Administration Building will now also accommodate all Odyssey administration staff, who were previously based in various locations around Auckland.  The brief’s intent was to bring all administration staff together to allow closer cooperation with the current support facilities, and fit comfortably into the existing residential neighbourhood.

The design concept of the H-shaped building incorporates visible changes of direction of the building form, analogous to the positive change in direction of resident’s lives brought about by Odyssey.  The building is a two storey freestanding building, and sited to allow for a future wing expansion to the eastern side of the building.  The building shape also maximises natural light and outlook for the flexible open place office spaces.  A large staff area on the lower level is intended to bring all staff together during the day to maximise communication between teams.  This space opens to a private courtyard, behind the main entry and circulation core, for staff relaxation.
